A Successful Florida BKCASE Workshop

Friday, January 27, 2012

The BKCASE core team conducted its ninth BKCASE workshop at the impressive Florida Test Bed facility ran by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL last weekon January 17-19.  The BKCASE project is in its third and final year with only three workshops left in 2012 before the final release of SEBoK and the GRCSE versions 1.0 in fall (SEBoK) and winter (GRCSE) 2012.

At the most recent workshop the BKCASE core team and over 20 authors discussed the recent set of reviewer comments provided between Sept-Dec. 2011 for SEBoK 0.5.  The team developed a plan for authors to adjudicate these comments in the next  SEBoK versions 0.75 and SEBoK 1.0.  At the last BKCASE workshop in October, in London, the BKCASE team decided to release an interim version SEBoK 0.75 to fulfill gaps created in version 0.5. Only a select group of articles were chosen for editing in this version.  In mid-March the SEBoK 0.75 will be released to the public for a short 30 day review period. All comments received from reviewers for the versions 0.5 and 0.75 will be adjudicated by the authors with updates provided to the reviewers in either versions 0.75 or 1.0, depending on whether comments are applicable to one version, or the other, or both.

In Daytona Beach the BKCASE team also discussed the SEBoK Wiki, the chosen medium for delivering the SEBoK to the public.  A discussion on the v0.5 lessons learned and the way ahead using technical improvements for future iterations was led by Nicole Hutchison.  Additional discussion points from the workshop included the release of GRCSE v0.5 in mid December.  The Graduate Reference Curriculum to Advance Systems Engineering is currently available online for public review at http://www.bkcase.org/grcse-05/ until March 7, 2012.  Instructions are available online for accessing the document and returning feedback.  The GRCSE discussion led by Tim Ferris also covered the way ahead for GRCSE v1.0.  The BKCASE team decided it will release an interim GRCSE v0.75 internally for review among the BKCASE author team.  Other workshop discussion points included SEBoK part leader updates, the Stewardship plans and way ahead, BKCASE outreach activities and tutorials.  BKCASE tutorials are currently scheduled at the upcoming CSER (in March) and INCOSE IS (in July), please contact bkcase@stevens.edu if you are interested in receiving tutorial information.

On day three of the workshop BKCASE members split into working groups for a full day of small group break out sessions.  The workshop was a large success with credit and appreciation due to the wonderful FTB-ERAU faculty and staff members who hosted and helped us to facilitate the event.  Special thanks to Dr. Massood Towhidnejad, Ms. Diana  Dunham, and Mr. Todd Waller and the rest of the FTB staff for the gracious hospitality.
